Artist's Statement

Lisa Brown - An artist's statement

I have been searching for a media that best expresses the vibrant colors and intricate shapes I see in nature. Although I love to paint with watercolors, I am truly a mixed media person. Using watercolors I paint rice paper and then form it into flowers allowing my work have depth by bending and curling the paper off the background. With this method I am able to give flowers a life and movement that I could not achieve in flat work.

My textural work is mixed media with beads added to create the highlights I need. In these pieces the work also comes off the pages adding the highlights and depth I want to convey while using a variety of painted textured papers and hand-made papers.

Fabric collage helps me simplify my subject allowing me get the most from colors. I have begun to incorporate the sense of joy that children give me in my newest work. I give the children expression and personality through their gestures and clothing.

Although I love to paint and create especially when I open myself up to let the media flow onto the paper, I love teaching more. I am always giving workshops and I find that helping others find their creative talents is my favorite thing to do. I spend much of my summer months working on my own technique and the rest of the year  is spend with workshops. I offer many workshops for those suffering with illness and their families because I truly believe that art is therapeutic.

Overall, I want to convey a feeling of calm and serenity with the tone of the awesome beauty and color in nature while at the same time conveying a sense of joy.
